Teaching reading with common core standards
From the Common Core Mission Statement: “The common core state standards provide a a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.” They are created to lay out a program that is relevant and applicable to the real world, to prepare students across the nation for future success in college and careers.
The Reading Standards place an emphasis on both the complexity level of the text and the proficiency with which students read. There is a grade-by-grade increase of text complexity, and students must exhibit growth in their reading ability year by year. Students in grades K-5 are assessed in the following areas: Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, and Reading Foundational Skills. Literature includes fictional stories, dramas and poetry. Nonfiction texts encompass biographies, books about history, social studies, science and the arts, and technical texts. Foundational Skills includes phonics and word recognition, fluency, and in the early grades, phonological awareness and print concepts.
LeveledReader.com offers a wide variety of leveled books that are ideal for use with the Common Core Standards. We provide both fiction and nonfiction books in Guided Reading levels A through R.
