Spend time reading with first readers:
Every time you read with your child, you are contributing to her brain development. Read together every day, and choose books that both of you enjoy. Here are some ideas for making the most of reading time with your beginning reader.
Read your favorite books again and again. This helps build language skills, and reinforces reading behaviors.
Let your children choose what to read. Leveled Reader has a great selection of first readers with plenty of choices for every level and every interest.
Talk about the pictures and the characters. Relate them to things in your child’s life. Try to predict what’s going to happen next in the story.
Choose books that are filled with rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Make it playful and fun to read together. Sing, clap, change the words, use funny voices. Make the most of the rhyming sounds to help develop sound awareness.
Make reading time bonding time together. And, also important is knowing when to stop – when your child loses interest or has trouble paying attention, it’s a good idea to wrap it up.
Be a great role model. Make sure your children see you spending time reading for your own enjoyment too.
Know that you are giving your child a precious gift – the love of reading.
